The Chicago Blackhawks signed Alex Vlasic to a three-year, entry-level contract. The defenseman’s junior season at Boston University ended in the Terriers’ 3-1 loss to UConn in the Hockey East Tournament quarterfinals on Saturday. He will join the Blackhawks on Thursday.

The 20-year-old scored eight points – one goal and seven assists. He also blocked 51 shots in 32 games as an alternate captain this past season at BU. He had 20 points, four goals and 16 assists, and blocked 97 shots in 82 games during his collegiate career.

“It’s rare to find a player of Alex’s skill level and size and we look forward to him continuing his development path with our club. His steady development at Boston University was noticeable and encouraging as we chart his future with our team,” general manager Kyle Davidson said of the blueliner.

The Chicago Blackhawks selected Alex Vlasic 43rd overall in the second round of the 2019 NHL Draft. His newly signed three-year deal will carry an $824,167 salary cap hit through the 2023-24 season.

Chicago has seven other NCAA prospects this season. Wisconsin’s Josh Ess and Ohio State’s Jake Wise are set to graduate, but it’s unlikely the Blackhawks will sign either one of them to an NHL contract.

Prospects Returning To College Next Season

  • Drew Commesso – BU
  • Landon Slaggert – Notre Dame
  • Connor Kelley – Minnesota Duluth
  • Wyat Kaiser – Minnesota Duluth

With the Wilmette, Illinois native’s signature, the Blackhawks have inked their first three selections from the 2019 draft class.

  • Kirby Dach – First round, 3rd pick
  • Michal Teply – Fourth round, 105th pick

Forward Antti Saarela, the 123rd pick in the fourth round, and goaltender Dominic Basse, the 167th pick in round six, are unsigned. Defenseman Cole Moberg, the 194th pick in round seven, is now with the San Jose Barracuda after playing on an AHL contract last season with Rockford.
