Patrick Kane Expected to Re-Sign with Blackhawks

The NHL trade deadline is fast approaching. For the Chicago Blackhawks, this year’s deadline signals a chance to accumulate draft capital for new general manager Kyle Davidson. However, during the speculation period that is currently ongoing, a rather interesting fact has come to light. According to Scott Powers and Mark Lazerus of The Athletic, superstar Patrick Kane is expected to remain in Chicago. This doesn’t mean just beyond the deadline, but beyond the expiration of his current contract.

Again, while most of the information pertains to players such as Ryan Carpenter, Dylan Strome, Dominik Kubalik, and Calvin de Haan, the duo reported the Kane news as well. This is an interesting development. Why? Well, Kane’s name has appeared in the rumor mill this season. The Blackhawks are clearly rebuilding, and moving Kane would return a massive haul for Chicago. But it appears Kane doesn’t want to leave and understands the meaning of playing for the Blackhawks his whole career.

Questions Regarding Kane’s Next Contract

The most interesting aspect of this, beyond Kane wanting to remain through a rebuild, is what Kane’s next contract will look like. Currently, the American superstar is making $10.5 million AAV at age 33. Will he take less money to help the team sign players to be competitive? In addition, is there a chance he takes less so fellow star Alex DeBrincat can get paid on his next deal? There are so many considerations with this news.

While the speculation is certainly worth considering, the news alone is enough to grab a reader’s attention. Patrick Kane has been the poster boy for the success Chicago has had since he was drafted. Partnered with Jonathan Toews, the two are destined to have their numbers hanging in the rafters at the United Center after their careers end. Now, it appears there is a very good chance that Kane plays his entire career with the Blackhawks.
