White Sox to Give Jake Burger Reps at Second Base

GM Rick Hahn believes Burger has some versatility to his game, so the White Sox will let him spread his wings a bit.

Jake Burger Chicago White Sox Second Base

The Chicago White Sox have a logjam of players with similar skill sets. Working Jake Burger, Gavin Sheets, and Andrew Vaughn into the lineup while Jose Abreu remains at first base is no easy task. But the Sox are going to take a different approach with one of those names this year. According to general manager Rick Hahn, the White Sox will give Burger opportunities at second base.

Burger’s primary position is third base, but Yoan Moncada has the hot corner locked down. Hahn believes Burger has some versatility to his game, so the White Sox will let him spread his wings a bit.

The 2017 first-round draft pick does have some experience — albeit an extremely small sample size — at second base. He played one game at the keystone during his college career and logged five games there during the 2021 season at Triple-A Charlotte.

Burger will have to prove he can be a viable option at second base, but getting his bat into the lineup is the primary objective of this project. During his first cup of coffee with the Sox, Burger slashed .263/.333/.474 with one home run and three RBIs in 42 MLB plate appearances. At the Triple-A level, he compiled a .274/.332/.513 slash line with 18 home runs and 54 RBIs in 340 plate appearances.

Deploying Jake Burger at second base may come as a surprise on the surface. But as Hahn indicated, the Chicago White Sox want to reward his hard work while maneuvering a tricky roster situation.
