The Chicago Cubs are signing left-handed pitcher Steven Brault, according to Robert Murray and confirmed by Jon Heyman. The details of the deal are not available yet.
The Pirates have primarily used Brault as a starter across his six MLB seasons. He owns a 4.77 ERA with a 4.67 FIP. In 2020, Brault had a mini breakout, starting 10 of 11 games pitched with a 3.38 ERA and 1.19 WHIP. He was voted the Steve Blass Award winner as the Pirates’ top pitcher.
However, last season, Brault dealt with a recurring injury. A lat strain sidelined him during Spring Training and he missed the first four months of the season. He returned in early August for a seven-game stint, only to be shut down for the rest of the year. During those contests, he racked up a less than stellar 5.86 ERA.
Brault’s last couple of starts were his worst, which may have had something to do with his injury. He looked like the 2020 version of himself in his first four starts, tossing 18.2 innings with a 1.93 ERA and only four walks.
After making a significant move, adding Japanese slugger Seiya Suzuki, the Chicago Cubs are looking to bolster the rest of the roster. Steven Brault adds depth to the pitching staff as a starter with the ability to pitch in relief. The hope is he can stay healthy, and the Cubs can unlock the potential he flashed in 2020.
In addition, Brault will be fun to have in the clubhouse and on road trips. Not only did the North Siders sign a major league pitcher, but they also signed a musician.
