When MLB free agency originally opened, very few baseball minds expected the Colorado Rockies to make major moves. Well, the Rockies defied those expectations Wednesday by agreeing to terms with former Chicago Cubs star Kris Bryant. The reported deal is for seven years and $182 million.

Rumors surfaced over the 24 hours or so leading up to the news that Colorado was in on Bryant. Many baseball fans and analysts predicted a move west for the 2016 NL MVP since his family is in Las Vegas. However, a destination like Seattle was thought to be more likely than Colorado. Apparently, we all thought wrong.

In 2021, Bryant slashed .265/.353/.481 in 144 games between Chicago and San Francisco. After a Cubs’ brutal collapse entering July, the Cubs traded Bryant to the Giants for prospects Caleb Kilian and Alexander Canario. With Bryant departing the Bay Area after just half a season and Kilian on the rise, it appears the Cubs got the better end of the deal.

Like many former Cubs, fans were hoping for a reunion with the third baseman. However, it’s clear the Cubs are looking to the future and trying to build a different team. Bryant’s $26 million annual price tag was likely too rich for Jed Hoyer’s current taste.

This is a major move for the Colorado Rockies, but legitimate skepticism surrounds the signing. Will the organization be competitive in the seven years that Bryant signed on for? That question alone is rather loaded, but one would hope for Bryant’s sake that his new team builds around him.
