The Chicago Cubs remain busy ahead of Thursday’s first Spring Training games of the season. However, although baseball is beginning, players are still signing and being traded all over the league. The Cubs are one of those teams still adding. After adding Jonathan Villar on Thursday, the Cubs announced the numbers for pitcher Daniel Norris and also agreed to terms with Robert Gsellman on a deal.

The Norris news broke on Wednesday in the chaos that has been the MLB offseason following the lockout. The former Tigers pitcher will make $1.75 million with $2 million in incentives attached to the deal for one year. This move is a nice low-risk, high-reward move that the Cubs have hit on in the past. The former Blue Jays prospect carries a 4.65 career ERA, and struggled in 2021 in 56 games between Detroit and Milwaukee. However, the Cubs saw what Norris did in 2020. He carried a 3.25 ERA, possessed a 4.0 K/BB ratio, and pitched 27.2 innings in 14 outings. He has shown upside and the Cubs clearly think he can excel with them.

In addition, the Cubs adding Gsellman adds further bullpen depth. Although his career numbers with the New York Mets don’t wow anyone, he possesses something the Cubs see as valuable bullpen depth entering 2022. Perhaps he is yet another candidate to work in the pitch lab with and develop some talent that is likely there. Both the Gsellman and Norris moves provide depth and don’t hurt the team in the long run either.

The Cubs will continue to add as Spring Training moves forward. Don’t be surprised if a significant amount of these types of moves are made in the coming days.
