Cubs Sign Drew Smyly to a One-Year Deal

According to Jon Heyman, the Chicago Cubs have signed left-handed pitcher Drew Smyly to a one-year deal.

Smyly spent last season with the World Series champion Atlanta Braves, posting a 4.48 ERA while going 11-4 in 29 games. For his career, the lefty has posted a 4.18 ERA in 217 appearances, with 134 starts.

He is no stranger to the Cubs, as he was signed by Chicago in 2017 on a two-year deal. That said, he never made an appearance as he was recovering from Tommy John surgery. Eventually Smyly was traded to the Texas Rangers. Now, he’ll earn a second chance in Chicago, perhaps in a starting role if he shows well in this season’s abbreviated Spring Training.

The Cubs continue the theme of adding pitching depth this off season, and with the back of the starting rotation in question, Smyly will be added to the list of potential options.
