Today’s Spring Training game against the Cincinnati Reds brought more negative injury news for the Chicago Cubs. Cubs’ top prospect Brennen Davis was struck with a pitch on the inside of his right knee during an at-bat in the second inning. He briefly stayed in the game, but was subbed for a pinch-runner after looking uncomfortable on the knee running the bases.
Hopefully, this is a precautionary move. That said, it draws concerns whenever your top prospect leaves a game due to injury. Unfortunately, this isn’t the first time Davis has been banged up during Spring Training. Last year, Davis was hit in the head by a pitch, causing him to miss the season’s opening games. However, despite the concern, the outlook for Davis appears positive per Jordan Bastian.
Davis is expected to begin the season at Triple-A Iowa after reaching that level toward the end of 2021. He slashed .268/.397/.536 with four home runs and 12 RBI in just 68 plate appearances. In addition, the expectation is for the 2018 second-round pick to make the big league club at some point this summer. Ideally, this won’t be a major setback for Davis and the #15 prospect in baseball can resume baseball activities soon.
