It’s not that difficult to find people still discussing the Chicago Bears trading away Khalil Mack to the Los Angeles Chargers. It was one of the first and biggest moments of the new Bears’ regime. When Bears’ GM Ryan Poles met with reporters yesterday, he had plenty to say about the Khalil Mack trade.
On the surface, the Bears at least got something in return for Khalil Mack. Draft picks are better than wasting three years of the prime of Mack’s career and then letting him walk away for nothing. Since the Bears aren’t ready to compete for a championship during that window, it’s clear that Ryan Poles was thinking about how both sides could benefit from a split in their relationship.
The Los Angeles Chargers are getting a dominant pass rusher in Mack. Adding him to the same defensive line as Joey Bosa and bringing in J.C. Jackson will greatly strengthen an already good Chargers defense.
Ryan Poles knows how he wants to build this Chicago Bears team and if more pieces were already in place, they likely would have kept Khalil Mack. The Bears are rebuilding from the ground up. They have a first-time head coach in Matt Eberflus who has previous success in building a defense in his own way. This partnership between Poles and Eberflus is only beginning and learning from the Khalil Mack trade is crucial, regardless of which side comes out of it better than before.
