The news for Garett Crochet keeps getting worse. This week in Spring Training Garrett Crochet left the game after facing only one batter. Reports indicated the worst that he would need Tommy John surgery. Today, Crochet confirmed the worst fears with the media. He will be undergoing Tommy John surgery “early this week”. Crochet also confirmed that he will not be playing this year.

Dr. James Andrews will be the one performing the surgery. Dr. Andrews has done Tommy John surgeries for other White Sox players including Dane Dunning and Jimmy Cordero.

What This Means For Garret Crochet

According to Garrett Crochet, the tear came on the second to last pitch he threw. He said he knew right away how serious the injury was.

Crochet will take have a long road to recovery ahead. White Sox starter Michael Kopech had to experience the same issues with having to take a year off and rehab. Last year Crochet provided 54.1 innings of work with 65 strikeouts and 1.27 WHIP. In the small spring training sample size, Crochet had an ERA of 2.08 with a 1.15 WHIP. He was destined to be one of the White Sox top relievers this year.

What This Means From the White Sox

The White Sox will now have to find a replacement for the flame-throwing Crochet. In house, there are talks that Bennett Sousa will be the player who is given the opportunity to take his place. Sousa was the 10th rounder out of Virginia. Sousa had a 3.97 ERA, 1.235 WHIP, 2.83 FIP, and 13 K/9 in 22.2 innings in Triple-A last year.

During the off-season, the White Sox added Kendall Graveman and Joe Kelly. These moves should help the bullpen but with Crochet gone the front office has the opportunity to make another trade before the season starts. Adding another lefty to the bullpen will help keep Tony LaRussa’s options versatile.
