The Chicago White Sox will open the 2022 season on the road in Detroit this Friday. On Monday morning, manager Tony La Russa provided clarity on the team’s starting rotation for the first series of the season.

There we have it. How La Russa convinced Rick Hahn to attempt to get either of these guys out of retirement is beyond impressive. Should that option not work out, it seems White Sox manager Tony La Russa has a backup plan.

Lucas Giolito will get the Opening Day nod Friday when the White Sox open the season against the Tigers. Dylan Cease will pitch Saturday and Michael Kopech takes the mound for Sunday’s series finale. Prior to Lance Lynn suffering a knee injury during a Spring Training start on April 2, he likely would have slotted in sometime during the first series of the campaign.

Michael Kopech is the name the White Sox will go to for their No. 3 slot in the rotation. The hard-throwing righty was delayed in Spring Training due to an offseason illness and will most likely be on a very strict pitch limit.

The rest of the starting rotation figures to include Dallas Kuechel and some makeup of Reynaldo Lopez and Vince Velasquez. Who gets the ball when the White Sox come home on Tuesday, April 12 to face Seattle remains to be seen. For Chicago White Sox fans hoping to avoid Dallas Kuechel day during the home opener, maybe Buehrle will see La Russa’s call for help and suit up for the Pale Hose.
