On Thursday afternoon, the Chicago White Sox finalized their 2022 Opening Day roster. A few key players are missing from the group due to various injuries — some previously known and others coming as a surprise. Most notably, third baseman Yoan Moncada has a Grade 1 oblique strain and will miss approximately three weeks. In his place, the White Sox recalled Jake Burger from Triple-A Charlotte among several roster moves.
Five other names join Yoan Moncada on the injured list. Relief pitcher Ryan Burr (right shoulder strain) is the other “surprise” appearance. General manager Rick Hahn said Burr should not be out as long as Moncada.
Triple-A Transaction Torrent
In order to finalize the 2022 Opening Day roster, the White Sox made a number of transactions involving the Charlotte Knights.
In addition to Jake Burger, the Sox recalled reliever Matt Foster from the Triple-A squad.
The White Sox added a pair of relievers previously on minor-league deals by selecting the contracts of lefty Tanner Banks and righty Kyle Crick from Charlotte. Left-hander Bennett Sousa will join Banks in making a big-league roster for the first time, though he was part of the 40-man squad and did not require a transaction with Charlotte.
Further shuffling players, the South Siders outrighted catcher Seby Zavala to the Triple-A team. And with outfielder Micker Adolfo out of minor-league options, the White Sox designated him for assignment.
