La Russa ‘Concerned’ About Giolito After Early Exit from White Sox Opener

“I’m concerned about [Giolito] because he felt something…he was smart to come out. We’ve got a lot riding on him getting checked,” said La Russa.

The Chicago White Sox dropped their 2022 season opener in disappointing fashion on Friday, but the team’s worries extend beyond the result. Manager Tony La Russa is “concerned” about Lucas Giolito as the righty exited his Opening Day start early due to left abdominal tightness.

Giolito tossed four innings of scoreless ball with two walks and six strikeouts before his premature departure. La Russa’s concern stems from Giolito’s competitive nature, which would typically drive him to remain in the game. Surely the South Siders’ injury issues elsewhere in the rotation are on La Russa’s mind as well.

Already without Lance Lynn to begin the season, the White Sox need Giolito to anchor the staff in the early going. However, La Russa commended the big righty’s decision to not push the envelope after experiencing discomfort.

“I’m concerned about [Giolito] because he felt something…he was smart to come out. We’ve got a lot riding on him getting checked,” the Sox skipper said.

The Chicago White Sox have not elaborated on Lucas Giolito’s status as of this writing. He is currently undergoing further evaluation. Check back for further updates as they become available.
