White Sox RHP Lucas Giolito Will Go to Injured List, Miss At Least 2 Starts

The South Siders have their work cut out for them when it comes to filling innings over the next couple of weeks.

Lucas Giolito Injury Update Return Chicago White Sox

Just one game into the 2022 season, the Chicago White Sox received some discouraging injury news. Starting pitcher Lucas Giolito will head to the injured list after exiting his Opening Day start with left abdominal tightness. That designation will see him miss at least two starts, and that’s an “optimistic projection.”

Giolito pitched four innings of scoreless, one-hit ball with two walks and six strikeouts before his early departure on Thursday. The big righty said he “felt something” on three consecutive pitches in his final inning, which prompted him to alert the training staff.

“Very just freak kind of random, kind of stuff that can happen. I didn’t think I’d ever be dealing with such a strange injury. But here we are,” Giolito added. “It’s definitely not oblique related at all. Given the area, initially it was like, ‘Oh, could this be oblique?’ But it’s not, and that’s a good thing.”

Call it “freak,” “random,” or any other arbitrary designation, but the best descriptor would be “extremely unfortunate.” The White Sox are already without fellow top-of-the-rotation arm Lance Lynn due to a knee injury he suffered at the end of Spring Training.

With the team’s top two starters on the shelf, Tony La Russa is digging deep into the White Sox depth chart. He announced journeyman Vince Velasquez will start Tuesday’s home opener and mentioned first-time big-leaguer Tanner Banks as another rotation option.

Add in a truncated Spring Training likely to shorten other starters’ early-season outings, and the South Siders have their work cut out for them. Lucas Giolito heading to the injured list is just the latest development in an already tumultuous start to the Chicago White Sox 2022 season.
