Sure, it would’ve been nice for the Chicago Cubs to win Sunday against the Milwaukee Brewers, completing the shortened three-game series sweep. That said, there were a couple of bright spots on Sunday that should have fans excited about the season.

The Stro Show’s Opening Act

Marcus Stroman made his Cubs debut Sunday afternoon, and he did not disappoint. Throwing five innings with three strikeouts, three walks, and giving up just one run, Stroman proved to be exactly what the Cubs signed him for: a dependable arm that can keep the Cubs competitive deep into ballgames.

Whenever a division rival such as the Brewers comes into Wrigley, the atmosphere from the fans can have a huge impact on the players. Opening weekend in Chicago was no exception, and Stroman expressed his appreciation after Sunday’s game.

Seiya’s Arrival

Seiya Suzuki was another bright spot for the Cubs in Sunday’s matinee. In his first at-bat against Brewers’ All-Star hurler Freddy Peralta, the righty smashed a three-run, 412-foot home run to give the Cubs an early lead.

Suzuki proved all weekend just how valuable he can be to this Cubs team. In eight at-bats during Opening Day weekend, he had three hits including six RBIs and four walks. So far, Suzuki has seen 48 pitches in 10 plate appearances and has swung and missed only once. Yes, it’s very early into the season, but if he can continue this kind of plate discipline consistently throughout the season, don’t be surprised if Suzuki is playing in the All-Star game this summer, at worst.

It’s a long season, and we’re just getting underway, but two out of three games against one of the top teams in the National League is a great start. The Cubs have an off day on Monday and head to Pittsburgh for a two-game series against the Pirates beginning on Tuesday.
