Jayden Perron scored 3:30 into overtime, and the Chicago Steel defeated the Team USA (U17) 3-2 on Sunday at USA Hockey Arena in Plymouth, Michigan.

Jackson Blake and Andon Cerbone also scored, and Christian Manz made 16 saves for Chicago, which set a new franchise record for points in a single season with 85. The 2019-20 Steel team set the previous mark at 83 points in a season that ended earlier because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Chicago (39-13-8-1) holds a two-point lead against the Dubuque Fighting Saints (39-16-2-3) for first place in the Eastern Conference, with two games remaining for each team. The Steel clinched a first-round bye for the 2022 USHL Clark Cup Playoffs last week. The USHL-leading Tri-City Storm (44-11-3-1) sit at 92 points and have already clinched the Western Conference regular-season title.

The Steel will finish out their regular season schedule with a home-and-home this coming weekend against the Muskegon Lumberjacks (32-22-3-3), who are third in the Eastern Conference.

Chicago will be without Nick Moldenhauer (2022 NHL prospect) and Adam Fantilli (2023 NHL prospect) while the forwards play for Canada in the U18 World Championship. The tournament is April 23-May 1 in Germany. The duo will return to the Steel for the playoffs.

Moldenhauer leads Steel rookies in scoring with 43 points (18 goals, 25 assists) in 41 games. Fantilli is tied for the USHL lead in goals with 37 and ranks second on the Steel in scoring with 74 points in 54 games.
