It’s nice to receive potential good news every once in a while. On Tuesday afternoon, Chicago White Sox general manager Rick Hahn said third baseman Yoan Moncada could begin a rehab stint at Triple-A Charlotte this weekend.
Moncada has been on the injured list since Opening Day due to a right oblique strain. Prior to today, the team had not provided many concrete updates on Moncada’s status. However, he did get some swings in and take groundballs over the weekend in Minnesota.
The White Sox are currently reeling from injuries. Luis Robert, Eloy Jimenez, Lucas Giolito, AJ Pollock, Lance Lynn, Joe Kelly, and others have all missed time for the South Siders this season.
If Moncada is set for a rehab stint in Charlotte, it could be a big break for a White Sox team that needs an offensive jolt. In their last seven games, all of which the Sox have lost, they’ve been outscored 45-15. There has been little to no patience at the plate as the team isn’t taking many walks. Moncada has a keen eye at the plate that allows him to work counts and drive up opponents’ pitch counts.
In 2021, Yoan Moncada slashed .263/.375/.412 with 14 home runs and 61 RBIs, good for a 4.0 bWAR. After a slow start to the 2022 season, Chicago White Sox are surely hoping Moncada can bring a boost when he eventually returns.
