Although Seiya Suzuki has come down to earth a bit over the last couple of weeks (8-44 with 15 strikeouts), there’s no denying how hot his start to the season was. Suzuki began his career with a nine-game hitting streak, tying Akinori Iwamura for the longest streak by a Japanese-born player to begin their MLB career. It also tied Andy Pafko for the longest streak to open a career by a Cubs player. Due to his hot start, Suzuki was named NL Player of the Month for April.

In addition, Suzuki started with an 11-game on-base streak. He finishes the month of April with a .279/.405/.529 (.934 OPS) slash line with four homers, 14 RBI, and 14 walks. Suzuki also earned NL Player of the Week honors for his efforts during the period ending April 17. During that week, Suzuki slashed .412/.545/1.059 with three bombs and a 314 wRC+.

Seiya has quickly become a fan favorite. Although his strikeout rate has climbed to 27.3 percent, his barrel rate (18.4 percent), walk rate (15.9 percent), and wOBA (.401) remain well above average. Hopefully, this is the tip of the iceberg as Suzuki gets acclimated to baseball in the majors.
