The Chicago White Sox put together a dominant performance on the South Side Monday afternoon. On another dreary day in Chicago, Dylan Cease and the Sox shut out the Los Angeles Angels 3-0. Cease allowed very little on the day and the White Sox scored what they needed early in the series finale.

The Mustache

The story today was Dylan Cease. He absolutely dominated Angels hitters all afternoon, finishing with 11 strikeouts, one hit, and one hit batsman across seven scoreless innings. Cease worked quickly all afternoon. His confidence has never been higher as he continues to throw any of his pitches in any count. Simply put: Cease knew what he wanted to throw and threw it.

As we’ve seen him do, he got ahead of hitters with his secondary pitches. Cease got first-pitch strikes on 16 of the 23 hitters, 20 called strikes, and 11 swinging strikes. But what we’ll remember for a long time was watching him strike out the game’s best hitter, Mike Trout, three times!

Trout also fanned in his fourth and final at-bat against Liam Hendriks to end the game. Elsewhere in the bullpen, Kendall Graveman allowed one hit in a scoreless eighth.

White Sox Score Early

One of the promising trends of 2022 is when the White Sox score early. The South Siders now own a record of 8-3 when scoring in the first three innings.

Tim Anderson and Luis Robert singled back-to-back to start the game. AJ Pollock plated Anderson on a groundout for the first run. Then, Patrick Sandoval walked Jose Abreu and Yasmani Grandal back-to-back to load the bases. Jake Burger stepped to the plate next and hit a sacrifice fly to score Robert.

These were the first runs Sandoval allowed all season. He entered Monday’s contest without a run allowed in 15 innings of work.

That early pair on the scoreboard proved to be all the Sox needed on the day, but they added one more in the sixth for good measure. Sandoval recorded two outs after allowing a leadoff single to Abreu. Then, Adam Engel doubled down the left-field line to plate Abreu and give the White Sox a 3-0 lead.

Prior to the game, the White Sox optioned Danny Mendick and Anderson Severino to Triple-A Charlotte.

Andrew Vaughn was unavailable for the third straight game. Manager Tony La Russa said Vaughn would play this week.

Liam Hendriks recorded his fifth save of the season.

What’s On Tap Next?

It is that time of year! The Chicago White Sox head up north to Wrigley Field for a two-game set against their crosstown rivals.

The Cubs and Sox enter the series with identical 9-13 records. Michael Kopech will take the mound for the South Siders to oppose Cubs’ lefty Drew Smyly. The matchup seems to favor the White Sox, who feast on left-handed pitching, but Smyly has a clean 2.79 ERA so far this season. Tuesday’s game will air on NBC Sports Chicago and Marquee Network from Wrigley Field at 6:40 PM CT.
