Chicago Bears fans have good reason to be excited about Ryan Poles’ first draft. The first-year general manager acquired several picks and addressed glaring weak spots in the secondary and the offensive line. One of the other areas Poles addressed was running back depth. In the sixth round at pick No. 203, the Bears selected Baylor running back Trestan Ebner.

While David Montgomery is the clear No. 1 option with Khalil Herbert right behind him, the rest of the running back depth chart is up for grabs. Ebner comes from the Big 12 champion Baylor Bears, so he is familiar with the high-stakes environment that the NFL brings. The hope is that this year Ebner can challenge to get touches out of the Bears backfield.

Trestan Ebner’s Playing Ability

One of Ebner’s Baylor teammates, Jacoby Clarke, recently shared some insight on the Bears’ new back’s abilities.

“He’s a hard-working, multi-dimensional talent. He can catch the ball out of the backfield, runs the ball for tough yards, breaks tackles, and returns kicks. He can do it all”, Clarke told Daniel Greenberg.

This description fits the script with the new scheme for the Bears’ offense. Following Chicago’s minicamp, Matt Eberflus said Luke Getsy’s offense will involve running backs more, especially in the passing game.

Of course, that’s an attribute Clarke highlighted when discussing Trestan Ebner. With David Montgomery not necessarily being an initial scheme fit (and potentially heading to free agency this offseason), the Bears need to start looking all options now for Getsy’s offense. Ebner could position himslef well for coming seasons if he finds his stride right away.

Ebner As A Teammate

Regarding Trestan Ebner’s work ethic and off-field personality, Jacoby Clarke said, “He’s going to practice harder than you could imagine and give it his all every time he’s in the field. Great locker room chemistry and character off the field. Impact player.”

Ebner is the type of player the Chicago Bears need to fill the roster, whether it is RB3 or elsewhere. Chicago’s roster will feature several new players in 2022. The Bears need open-minded, hard-working guys to help change the culture at Halas Hall and complement the new front office regime.
