The Chicago Fire are on the cusp of bringing Chris Mueller back to MLS, according to a report from The Athletic.
The 25-year-old winger joined Hibernian in the Scottish Premiership after the 2021 MLS season on a free transfer after four years with Orlando City SC.
The Schaumburg, Illinois native will come on a free transfer from Hibs but the Fire will send compensation to Orlando. Chicago will send $500,000 in GAM split during the next two years, plus a 2023 first-round SuperDraft pick and rights to an unnamed player.
Selected sixth overall in the 2018 SuperDraft by Orlando, Mueller scored 21 goals and 24 assists in 112 regular-season games. He tallied a career-high 10 goals to help the Lions reach the MLS Playoffs in 2020. His form didn’t translate in Europe, where he scored only one goal in four outings for the Hibs.
Chris Mueller will provide the Fire another player up front alongside Young Designated Player Jairo Torres from Liga MX’s Atlas. The duo of Mueller and Torres should help Chicago’s offense, which is tied for the lowest goal total this season at six with Vancouver Whitecaps FC.
What’s On Tap for Fire?
