House of the Dragon is a prequel series to HBO’s smash hit Game of Thrones. The show takes place about 200 years before the events we saw play out on Thrones. Today, we received our newest look at the show in the form of a teaser trailer. The trailer plays heavy into what made the Game of Thrones the juggernaut it was: recognizable family names, familiar locations, Targaryeans being nuts, and dragons. As a fan of the franchise, it’s a welcome sight.
House of the Dragon Trailer Review
As mentioned above, the show takes place 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones. The trailer opens with the Matt Smith’s Prince Daemon Targaryen waxing poetic about family legacy. He’s gonna be a polarizing character in this show. Think a two-handed Jamie Lannister combined with Viserys Targaryen from GoT, but with a dragon.
Next, we cut to the Iron Throne where houses of the Seven Kingdoms swear their fealty to King Viserys Targaryen. We hear the names Stark and Baratheon, as well as Velaryon as they take their oaths. They linger on a very important detail here: the lords are swearing their allegiance to Viserys, as well as his named heir – daughter Rhaenyra Targaryen. The camera cuts right to Prince Daemon. Welcome to our core conflict, folks.
The trailer also shows us that we are going to get badass women playing the game, as Princess Rhaenys Targaryen could become our new ‘Queen of Thornes’. We proceed with some classic Thrones imagery with shots of fights and grandeur spread across locations we’d seen before. We get the visual of a dragon egg on the incubator, love it.
It all culminates in the money shot. We see Prince Daemon walking with a torch in the dark as we hear a voiceover from him. “History does not remember blood. [Cue the dragon fire!] It remembers names.” A very cool visual to end on.
House of the Dragon will premiere on Sunday, August 21, 2022. Do you plan on watching, or are you still feeling burned (dragon humor) by the ending of Game of Thrones? Let us know in the comments or on Twitter!
