The Chicago Blackhawks will officially not have a first-round pick in the 2022 NHL Draft.

The Blackhawks sent a conditional first-round pick to the Columbus Blue Jackets as part of the Seth Jones trade last July. That pick was top-two protected in this year’s draft, but the Blackhawks did not win one of the draft lotteries Tuesday and will not regain it. Instead, the Blackhawks’ natural pick landed at No. 6 overall and now belongs to Columbus. Chicago will now hold onto their first-round pick in the 2023 NHL Draft.

The Blackhawks had a 15.4-percent chance of landing a top-two pick: 7.5% for first and 7.9% for second. Chicago, however, could still have a first-round pick in this July because of a conditional first-round pick acquired from the Minnesota Wild for goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury. If the Wild advance to the Western Conference Final and Fleury records four wins, the Blackhawks will land Minnesota’s first-round pick.

The Montreal Canadiens, who at 18.5 percent had the best chance of winning the lottery, will have the top overall pick in the draft. The New Jersey Devils won the No. 2 pick, and the Arizona Coyotes have the third pick.

“Now we know where we stand as we prepare for the upcoming draft,” Blackhawks general manager Kyle Davidson said in a statement. “We won’t have our own first-round pick, but with eight other picks – including five in the first three rounds – I have faith in our amateur scouting department’s ability to make the most out of our selections this summer.”

The NHL Draft will be July 7-8 at the Bell Centre in Montreal. The first round will be July 7, followed by rounds 2-7 on July 8.
