CM Punk isn’t pandering to the crowd.
The Chicago native wore a John Tavares New York Islanders jersey to taunt the crowd at UBS Arena, home of the Islanders, on Long Island on AEW’s Dynamite” on Wednesday.
Punk entered the stage facing the crowd then did his signature “It’s Clobberin’ Time” shout while down on his right knee. He stood up, turned around, and walked slowly backwards down the ramp to show the crowd the Tavares jersey. The UBS Arena crowd erupted by booing Punk upon seeing him wearing a Tavares jersey.
Tavares, who was the Islanders’ captain from 2013-18 and first overall pick in the 2009 NHL Draft, signed a seven-year contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs in July 2018. His departure from Long Island drew the ire of the Islanders fan base after the signing. Some of the fans still haven’t gotten over it.
Former Notre Dame player Islanders Anders Lee succeeded Tavares as Islanders captain. Lee has led New York to the conference finals twice, the Islanders only won one playoff round with Tavares. The Islanders missed the playoffs this season and fired head coach Barry Trotz. Trotz could be a candidate for the same role with the Chicago Blackhawks.
Back to the ring, Punk defeated Long Island native John Silver. CM Punk is the No. 1 contender for the AEW Championship. He will face AEW champion Hangman Adam Page at AEW’s “Double or Nothing”. The event takes place on Sunday, May 29 at T-Mobile Arena in Paradise, Nevada.
This will be Punk’s first AEW Championship match since he signed with AEW this past August. Punk made his debut with the promotion on “Rampage” at the United Center in Chicago.
