The Chicago Blackhawks have now officially received a second-round pick in the 2022 NHL Draft from the Minnesota Wild, completing the Marc-Andre Fleury trade in March.
Chicago would’ve received Minnesota’s first-round selection had the Wild advanced to the Western Conference Final with Fleury winning four games. Neither condition was met as Minnesota fell 4-2 in a first-round series to the St. Louis Blues on Thursday. The Blackhawks will now hold their natural pick at No. 36 and the Wild’s second-round pick.
Chicago could have three picks in the second round from a conditional second-round pick acquired from the Edmonton Oilers for defenseman Duncan Keith. If the Oilers advance to the Stanley Cup Final and Keith ranks in the top four among Oilers defensemen in time on ice during the first three playoff rounds, the Blackhawks will be awarded Edmonton’s second-round selection. If those conditions are not met, it will be a third-round pick. The Oilers will play Game 7 of their first round series against the Kings on Saturday in Edmonton.
Chicago traded its natural third-round selection to the Carolina Hurricanes for the Hurricanes’ 2021 third-round pick last July. With the No. 91 overall pick in the 2021 draft, Chicago selected defenseman Taige Harding.
Blackhawks Draft Notes
The Blackhawks do not have a first-round selection after transferring the No. 6 overall pick to the Columbus Blue Jackets as part of the Seth Jones trade last July.
Chicago will have multiple selections in the second round for the first time since 2016 when they selected three players. Those players were Alex DeBrincat (No. 39), Chad Krys (No. 45) and Artur Kayumov (No. 50). Only DeBrincat has played NHL games for Chicago. Krys is in the AHL with the Toronto Marlies. Kayumov remains in his native Russia, but the Blackhawks still hold his draft rights.
The Blackhawks have eight total picks in the 2022 NHL Draft, including five picks in the first three rounds. The draft is July 7-8 at the Bell Centre, home of the Montreal Canadiens. Round 1 will be July 7 and rounds 2-7 on July 8.
