With the Chicago Cubs set to begin a three-game series with the Diamondbacks in the desert, the team had a number of updates for reporters on Friday afternoon. Per Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune, reinforcements appear to be en route as the 2022 schedule creeps closer to Memorial Day.
As indicated, offseason acquisition Andrelton Simmons appears to be inching closer to a return with significant game action in Iowa. Simmons’ presence on the roster is more important than ever before now that Nico Hoerner is still recovering from what appears to be an ankle sprain. In addition, Alec Mills is inching closer to a return and David Bote is finally getting live at-bats in extended spring training.
The Bote and Simmons moves will add needed depth, especially defensively, to the Cubs’ infield. Both players will fill in nicely behind the likes of Hoerner, Patrick Wisdom, Nick Madrigal, and Jonathan Villar.
The Current Stars
In addition to the updates on players we’ve yet to see this season, there were updates on two important players on the 2022 roster. Unfortunately, there isn’t much to report on Nico Hoerner and Seiya Suzuki.
As indicated, neither Hoerner or Suzuki are in the lineup against Arizona on Friday evening. However, with both players remaining off the IL, there is hope they won’t be out too long. That said, both players are missing valuable development time in what is likely a lost 2022 season for Chicago.
