The Chicago White Sox put an end to the New York Yankees’ five-game winning streak with a 3-2 victory on Saturday night. Luis Robert’s single in the bottom of the ninth scored Tim Anderson from second base to put the White Sox back in the win column.

Wake Up Call

It had been tough sledding for the White Sox recently. The Yankees slugged out 25 runs to win last two games against the Pale Hose. However, White Sox starter Dallas Keuchel had other things in mind for the Bronx Bombers. Keuchel has not inspired much confidence lately, but to the lefty’s credit he’s been solid in his last two outings. He blanked the Yankees over his five innings of work. Keuchel allowed zero runs, four hits, three walks, and fanned three in the process.

A one-out single with Tim Anderson on second base in the first inning opened the scoring. La Panthera struck again later in the contest too, but drove in the first run for the South Siders. It was in the third inning where the crowd of over 32,000 got to see some fireworks. Yoan Moncada led off the inning and went deep on the first pitch of the at-bat. Moncada, hitting from the right side, took starter Jordan Montgomery’s offering 424 feet to center field to put the Sox up 2-0.

TLR That Genius

Kendall Graveman relieved Keuchel in the sixth inning. Tony La Russa has drawn questions from the media and fans for his usage or lack of usage of Graveman. The well rested righty was pitching for the first time in four days. He was brilliant in his two innings of work allowing just one hit and striking out two. Graveman is emerging as the best arm in the White Sox bullpen.

Yankees Rally

Joe Kelly was the next man up out of the bullpen and had his chance at redemption after his abysmal debut. He fared better this time around, but that’s not saying much. He allowed three consecutive singles for the Yankees to score and recorded just one out. La Russa wasted no time pulling Kelly in favor of closer Liam Hendriks. Anthony Rizzo stole second base off of Hendriks, but the rally ended after Hendriks struck out the next two hitters. La Russa’s decision to bring in his closer for the final five outs paid off, for now.

9th Inning Drama and Heroics

Hendriks put runners on second and third with no outs in the ninth. Catcher Kyle Higashioka lifted a sac fly that evened the score at two. However, Isiah Kiner-Falefa was thrown out trying to advance to third on the play. It was a heads up defensive play by Moncada to cut off A.J. Pollock’s throw home to get the second out. Hendriks struck out D.J. LeMahieu to end the threat.

In the bottom half of the inning, the White Sox put this game to sleep. Tim Anderson singled with one out and Yoan Moncada followed with a walk. La Pantera stepped up to the plate and placed a single into right field to score Anderson, who narrowly beat the tag. The game ended as a 3-2 walk off and a White Sox winner!

Notes

Jose Abreu broke a 0-22 slump with a single.

Luis Robert extended his hitting streak to 12 games.

Dallas Keuchel has pitched to a 2.70 ERA in his last four starts.
