Lucas Giolito would have been in line to start for the Chicago White Sox in their series opener Monday vs. the Kansas City Royals. However, the big righty landed on the COVID Related injured list Friday. Giolito remains sidelined for the time being so the White Sox will turn to Johnny Cueto in his place.
Cueto joined the Sox on a minor-league deal at the end of Spring Training. Now, the club has purchased his contract from Triple-A Charlotte and optioned Danny Mendick to open a roster space.
Cueto posted a 4.08 ERA across 114.2 innings in 21 starts for the Giants last season. During his rehab stint in Charlotte, he made four starts and logged a 5.17 ERA, 1.213 WHIP, and 17 strikeouts across 15.2 innings.
Coming off a woeful 2-4 week, the Chicago White Sox look to right the ship during their five-game series in Kansas City. After that extended set vs. the Royals, they will visit the New York Yankees, who gave them trouble all weekend. The South Siders will need Johnny Cueto to set the tone as he makes his first MLB start of the season.
