Cubs: Heyward to IL, Menez, Morel, Hughes on the Move

The Cubs made a series of roster moves on Tuesday including sending Jason Heyward to the IL and promoting No. 21 prospect Christopher Morel.

On Tuesday, reports surfaced in the morning that No. 21 ranked prospect INF/OF Christopher Morel and LHP Brandon Hughes were on their way to the big leagues. Those reports proved true on Tuesday afternoon as the Chicago Cubs made the moves official.

In order to make room for both Morel and Hughes, the Cubs made a pair of other transactions. LHP Conner Menez was sent to Triple-A Iowa and OF Jason Heyward lands on the IL.

Menez appeared in one game with the Cubs this season, tossing a scoreless inning with one strikeout in his lone appearance. Hughes will get a chance to become a left-handed staple in the Cubs’ bullpen. With Menez now out, Daniel Norris is the only other lefty besides Hughes in the pen.

Heyward’s trip to the IL sheds additional light on the Morel call up. The 22-year-old has seen a lot of time in center field with the Double-A Tennessee Smokies. With Brennen Davis also on the IL, the Cubs believe that Morel is the next deserving outfielder to get a chance in Heyward’s absence. Although it likely won’t be a lengthy stay, this is a great opportunity for Morel to showcase his talents in place of the savvy veteran.

What’s On Tap Next?

The Cubs and Pirates will play their second game of this latest three-game set on Tuesday night at Wrigley Field. With the lineup out, we will not get to see Christopher Morel’s first start on Tuesday. However, there is a good chance we will see Hughes out of the pen, and possibly Morel in a defensive replacement situation if all goes well or terribly wrong against Pittsburgh. Keegan Thompson takes the bump for the 6:40 p.m. start as the Cubs look to wrap up their third series win in a row.
