According to a report from Rolando E. Fermin, Chicago Cubs prospect Christopher Morel is being called up to the big leagues. Morel is currently rated as the No. 21 prospect in the Cubs’ system.
Thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic, development for all prospects has been skewed. In Morel’s case, a strong 2019 campaign was followed up by an underwhelming 2021 season. That said, the 22-year-old prospect is tearing the cover off the ball at Double-A Tennessee and will now have a chance to showcase his talents at the MLB level. In 28 games at Double-A, Morel is slashing .306/.380/.565 with seven home runs, five doubles, and 20 RBI.
Morel’s position definition has evolved in his time within the Cubs’ system. Originally considered a third baseman, Morel is now listed as an infielder/outfielder on the Cubs’ top 30 prospects list. In 2022, he has played third base, shortstop, and center field at the Double-A level.
Once the move becomes official, Morel will join the big club and fans will likely see Ildemaro Vargas designated for assignment. Ideally, Morel will get his chance to debut on Tuesday against the Pirates at Wrigley Field. However, we’ll know more once the lineup is released.
