The Chicago Cubs are staying busy this Tuesday. Following a report that Christopher Morel is being called up to the big leagues, more news surfaced. Former outfielder and Michigan State athlete Brandon Hughes is also getting promoted to the major league roster.
Drafted by the Cubs in the 16th round of the 2017 MLB Draft, Hughes started out as an outfielder. Making the transition to pitching full-time in 2019, Hughes has adapted and transitioned seamlessly. Hughes hasn’t allowed a run since July 27, 2021 at Double-A Tennessee. After receiving a promotion to Triple-A Iowa in April, Hughes has continued his dominance. Altogether between Double-A and Triple-A this year, Hughes has pitched 16.2 innings with only five hits allowed, three walks, 22 strikeouts, and a 0.480 WHIP.
The Cubs have been searching for a solidified left-handed reliever since the departure of Andrew Chafin at last year’s trade deadline. The corresponding move has yet to be announced, but an IL stint or minor league demotion could be on the horizon to make room for Hughes. Unlike Morel, Hughes was not on the 40-man roster.
