Tuesday marks the second day of voluntary OTAs for the Chicago Bears. With a first-year head coach in Matt Eberflus, the Bears get to begin their offseason work earlier than most. On Tuesday, Eberflus spoke with the media and called out the team’s first draft pick of 2022: CB Kyler Gordon.
The Bears selected Gordon out of Washington with the 39th pick in the 2022 NFL Draft. Although not a generally expected pick for Chicago, Gordon is already turning heads. Yes, this time period is just helmets and the pads aren’t on. Still, if Gordon is already showing off his freak athleticism, that bodes well for the rookie in his first NFL season.
Gordon was one of two defensive backs the Bears selected in the second round. Fellow DB Jaquan Brisker was the team’s second selection on Day 2 of the draft. Now, it appears the Bears may be on to something with their first pick in the Ryan Poles era.
One part of Eberflus’ quote that was not captured in the tweet above was that Gordon is “playing the defense the right way.” That level of confidence in a young cornerback surely bodes well for the Bears. Their two young defensive backs combined to give up only one touchdown last season at the collegiate level. Early on, it appears those skills are translating over to the NFL.
What’s On Tap Next?
Voluntary work will continue for the Chicago Bears this week. As for Kyler Gordon, it’s too early to know what a rookie season looks like for the former Huskie. There is a lot of time between now and Week 1, but the early signs for the rookie corner are encouraging. Gordon will definitely be a player who’s closley watched entering training camp, especially following the positive remarks from Coach Eberflus.
