When scouring the internet for Chicago Bears news, it is refreshing to come across something as obvious as this. According to Jeremy Fowler of ESPN, contract talks between the Bears and Roquan Smith are expected to pick up this summer.
This is refreshing news for Bears fans. Smith has been one of the best linebackers in the league since his rookie season. Losing Smith would prove detrimental to the team in both the near and long term. However, it appears GM Ryan Poles and company have their priorities straight as they look to get their star linebacker signed for the long haul.
Smith played in all 17 games last season, recording 153 total tackles, including 85 solo. In addition, the Georgia product added three sacks, two passes defended, and a pick-six. That said, Smith still has been snubbed for league-wide recognition despite having some of the best stats in the league at the linebacker position.
Keeping Roquan Smith in the fold will only help Matt Eberflus’ new defense. It appears the Bears also agree with said statement and will do everything to get him signed for the foreseeable future. Smith is a free agent after the 2022 season.
