Ahead of Wednesday’s series finale with the Pirates, the Chicago Cubs officially activated relief pitcher David Robertson off the IL. To make room for Robertson on the roster, the Cubs optioned Mark Leiter Jr. to Triple-A Iowa.

The Cubs are starting to get healthy at the right time. After learning that Marcus Stroman will be activated and pitch on Thursday, the Cubs getting Robertson back is a huge boost. Although the Cubs bullpen has been solid, returning arguably their best relief pitcher in Robertson certainly doesn’t hurt.

In 11 games this season, the 37-year-old has thrown 12.0 innings with a 1.50 ERA, 17 strikeouts, five saves, and only six walks. No one expected Robertson to be such a bright spot in the pen. That said, he is holding down the back end of the Cubs bullpen and closing out meaningful games in 2022.

With the boost, the Cubs will look to sweep the Pirates on Wednesday night before welcoming the Arizona Diamondbacks to town for four games on Thursday.
