Every baseball player dreams of hitting a home run in their first career plate appearance. In Christopher Morel’s case on Tuesday night, that exact moment happened. With a pinch-hit home run in the bottom of the eighth inning, Morel joined seven other Chicago Cubs players to homer in their first career trip to the plate.
Morel was the first Cub since Willson Contreras, who led the effort to give the 22-year-old a curtain call, to hit a home run in their first appearance. On Father’s Day in 2016, Contreras hit a home run against the Pittsburgh Pirates on Sunday Night Baseball. Ironically, Contreras’ blast was also in a pinch-hit capacity.
In incredible fashion, Contreras may have been the most excited player after Morel’s home run. The veteran backstop came flying out of the dugout, jumping around in excitement after the memorable moment. It truly felt as if Contreras’ career has come full circle from promising rookie, to veteran leader of the Cubs.
In recent memory, Cubs fans may recall Jorge Soler and Starlin Castro’s first career home runs. It is pretty incredible to think that four Cubs have homered in their first career plate appearance in the last 12 years.
Now, Morel has a chance to build on the excitement and continue earning regular playing time. If this is just the beginning, then there will be many incredible memories thanks to Morel. For now, go ahead and watch the home run on loop all day today.
