With the Chicago Cubs leading 2-0 on Saturday afternoon, Willson Contreras called for the trainer to come out when sitting at second base. Contreras then left the game with an apparent hamstring injury. Contreras got on base with a single then stole second. However, when running to third on a Seiya Suzuki foul ball, Contreras pulled up holding his hamstring.
In Contreras’ place, OF Rafael Ortega entered the game and took Contreras’ place as the designated hitter in the lineup. Following Ortega’s entrance, he scored on Seiya Suzuki’s RBI double.
It’s uncertain how bad Contreras’ injury actually is. However, if he felt any discomfort at all, it is wise to get out of the game before the injury gets potentially worse. In Contreras’ case, he was the DH and his exit doesn’t affect the Cubs’ pitchers. His long-term health is more important than making the injury worse. The Cubs reported on the broadcast, via Jim Deshaies, that Contreras left with right hamstring tightness.
This season, the Cubs’ catcher is slashing .258/.382/.458 with five home runs and 14 RBI. In addition, he has added seven doubles and incredible defensive catching behind the plate. Contreras is also hitting a number of milestones this season after hitting his 100th career home run this past week. It’s uncertain how long Contreras will be out, but hopefully his early exit on his terms saves him from missing too much time.
