Notre Dame alumnus Bryan Rust agreed to a six-year, $30.75 million contract with the Pittsburgh Penguins on Saturday.

The 30-year-old forward could have become an unrestricted free agent July 13. The contract begins in the 2022-23 season and runs through the 2027-28 campaign. It has an average annual value of $5.125 million.

Rust scored an NHL career-high 58 points (24 goals, 34 assists) in 60 games this season. He was third on the Penguins in goals and fourth in points, playing primarily on the top line with Sidney Crosby and Jake Guenztel.

Rust scored eight points (two goals, six assists) in the Penguins’ seven-game Stanley Cup Playoff first-round series against the New York Rangers.

“Bryan exemplifies what it means to be a Pittsburgh Penguin,” general manager Ron Hextall said. “Since being drafted by Pittsburgh, he has developed into a versatile player and leader on our team, capable of contributing in any situation. His leadership qualities and experience as a two-time Stanley Cup champion is an important piece of our team.”

Selected by Pittsburgh in the third round (No. 80) of the 2010 NHL Draft, Rust had 97 points (43 goals, 54 assists) in 161 games for Notre Dame. The Pontiac, Michigan native won a gold medal at the 2010 IIHF U18 World Championships for Team USA and the 2013 CCHA Tournament for the Irish.

Bryan Rust has 270 points (124 goals, 146 assists) in 424 NHL regular-season games. He also has 35 points (21 goals, 14 assists) in 79 postseason games, helping Pittsburgh win the Stanley Cup in 2016 and 2017. Since his NHL debut, only Crosby (234), Evgeni Malkin (189), and Guentzel (161) have scored more goals for Pittsburgh than Rust.
