After OTAs on Tuesday, Chicago Bears head coach Matt Eberflus and a few players spoke with the media. When addressing a number of players and observations from OTAs, Eberflus was asked about what stands out with his young quarterback Justin Fields. The first thing that Eberflus said? His deep ball.
“Man, he throws a good deep ball. I would say that.”

As Bears fans, this is something we saw a bit of last season in Fields’ rookie year. Unfortunately, there weren’t as many deep balls in the offense under Matt Nagy. With Eberflus, it appears we’ll have more of the deep ball than Nagy gave fans in past seasons.
“We’re going to take our shots down the field and man, he does a nice job doing that. That’s what stands out to me.”

More Deep Balls?
Now that’s exciting. Fields is arguably one of the better deep ball quarterbacks in the NFL, despite only entering his second season. The Green Bay Packers have a number of deep plays every season that wow fans everywhere. If new offensive coordinator Luke Getsy is bringing some of those shots to the Bears’ playbook, then we can expect a big season for Fields. With the likes of Darnell Mooney, Velus Jones Jr., and Byron Pringle on the roster, there is plenty of speed to go deep on a regular basis.
After years of anemic offenses, the Bears and their fans are hoping for a team with a respectable offense. Between a good set of coaches on offense, a number of weapons, and, hopefully, a good running game, there should be tangible improvement for Justin Fields and the whole unit under the new regime in Chicago.
It’s only May, but Matt Eberflus is probably already dreaming about some 50-yard or more plays with Justin Fields as the trigger man.
