The Chicago Cubs announced a pair of moves on Wednesday. Unfortunately, one move is positive and the other is not as great. According to Taylor McGregor, catcher Yan Gomes is heading to the IL after being scratched from yesterday’s game. However, taking his place on the active roster will be Nico Hoerner. Hoerner has missed the last couple of weeks with an ankle injury.

Gomes has been a staple for the Cubs this season. He and catcher Willson Contreras have formed a formidable duo for the North Siders. However, both players are now nursing injuries meaning the team’s depth at catcher will be tested. P.J. Higgins has looked good thus far, but it is uncertain what is behind him from a depth perspective.

On the season, Gomes is slashing .247/.267/.384 with two home runs and seven RBI. Although the numbers aren’t eye popping, Gomes has come through in the clutch on numerous occasions and calls a great game behind the plate. Losing him and Contreras is tough for a Cubs team playing better baseball of late.

On the flip side, the Cubs return a major name in Nico Hoerner. Although the offensive numbers for Hoerner aren’t amazing either, he has been consistent and a defensive staple for the Cubs at shortstop. In fact, he might be a too-early-to-determine Gold Glove candidate at the position.

The 25-year-old out of Stanford is slashing .276/.293/.396 with a pair of home runs and 11 RBI in 29 games. Again, the offense is still coming for Hoerner. However, if he continues making plays like this, he is worth his spot on the Cubs’ roster.
