Rarely does a movie announcement surprise me anymore. I’m happy to report that is not the case with the crazy announcement of Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey. Rhys Waterfield wrote and directed the movie. Waterfield has had his hand in a litany of horror productions, with many movies in the hopper as we speak. The movie description on IMDB is perfect: “It follows Pooh and Piglet as they go on a rampage after Christopher Robin abandons them.”
Christopher Robin is pulled away from them, and he’s not [given] them food, it’s made Pooh and Piglet’s life quite difficult…. So they’ve gone back to their animal roots. They’re no longer tame: they’re like a vicious bear and pig who want to go around and try and find prey.

In an interview with Variety, Waterfield shared some additional details. The movie takes place after Christopher Robin has left for college, leaving Pooh and Piglet to fend for themselves. They revert to their base instincts and chaos appears to ensue. This is a movie to keep on your release radar.
How Can They Make a Winnie the Pooh Horror Movie?
On January 1, 2022, AA Milne’s ‘Winnie the Pooh’ book entered the public domain. That means that all copyright protection granted to the book/characters etc. has expired. While the characters themselves are now available to use, it’s not a free for all. Tigger will not be in the movie, because he wasn’t in the first book, so his copyright remains. Disney purchased the rights to Winnie the Pooh in 2001. Disney had been paying royalties to use the characters since the 1960s.
I’m curious to see how successful this movie is. The buzz generated by the photos and the source material will get a lot of people to at least check it out. Given the popularity of Five Nights at Freddy’s there is more of an audience for the movie than people realize. The movie doesn’t have a release date at time of writing, but is slated to release this year.
