After a weekend full of roster shuffling for the Chicago Cubs, the team activated a familiar face. On Tuesday, INF Nick Madrigal was activated from the 10-day IL after missing time with lower back tightness. Madrigal provides reinforcements on the infield after Jonathan Villar recently went on the IL with a mouth injury.
Unfortunately for the former No. 4 overall pick, his offensive numbers have been underwhelming. In 23 games this season, Madrigal is slashing .203/.250/.241. In addition, the 25-year-old has just three doubles and two RBI for the campaign. Many fans are left wanting more from the former White Sox second baseman, and understandably so. In his first two big league seasons, he hit over .300 on the South side.
Madrigal’s return makes for an interesting dynamic on the infield. The team still has Andrelton Simmons, a recently healthy Nico Hoerner, and the Swiss Army Knife that is Christopher Morel. It’s uncertain when and how often Madrigal will see the field. However, assuming he’s fully healthy, the team needs more out of Madrigal. Otherwise, he may lose his roster spot to any number of Cubs prospects who have come up and made some noise.
