In a recent MLB Network segment, Jon Morosi stated that Oakland A’s pitcher Frankie Montas would be a good fit for the Chicago White Sox. The A’s are currently 12 games under .500 and will likely sell off Montas for some young talent at the trade deadline.

Morosi noted that a potential deal would have to be creative on the Sox’s end to land the 29-year-old. The White Sox currently have the 30th ranked MLB farm system, according to MLB.com. In light of that, Morosi mentioned the Sox would likely have to send back a young MLB-level talent to make a potential deal work.

In 11 starts with the A’s this season, Montas owns a 2-5 record and a 3.20 ERA. If he joined the White Sox rotation right now, he would have the second-best ERA of all the starting pitchers the South Siders have trotted out this season.

The White Sox Perspective

Obviously, landing a pitcher of Frankie Montas’s caliber would be beneficial, but is that what the White Sox actually need at this time?

The starting rotation has been a bright spot to date and should get a boost once Lance Lynn returns from injury. Lucas Giolito, Michael Kopech, and Dylan Cease have been holding the fort down through the season thus far. Hell, even Johnny Cueto has pitched admirably in his three starts since joining the Sox.

The South Siders’ problem has been at the plate, not on the mound. Once the team starts hitting (and let’s hope they do), the Sox should start playing up to their potential. Of course, winning the AL Central and earning a third consecutive playoff berth are among the expectations.
