Wow, it’s finally happening. After weeks of speculation surrounding Chicago Cubs prospect Caleb Kilian and his inevitable debut, everyone involved will no longer have to wait. According to sources close to Tommy Birch of the Des Moines Register, Kilian is being called up to start on Saturday for the Cubs.
Kilian has been excellent for the Iowa Cubs. The former eighth-round pick for the Giants is 2-0 with a 2.06 ERA this season. In addition, he has punched out 41 batters, allowed only 15 free passes, and pitched 39.1 innings over nine starts. Now, it appears Kilian will get a taste of big league action during Saturday’s doubleheader with the Cardinals.
Per Birch’s report, Kilian was not seen on Friday on the field with the Iowa Cubs, suggesting he is currently on his way to Chicago. There was speculation that Kilian might get a look on Saturday, but it appears to be all but officia. It’s uncertain which game Kilian will take the bump in. That said, he and Matt Swarmer will be on the mound for the Cubs.
Kilian’s debut brings quite a bit of excitement for the Cubs. After the tough news that Brennen Davis had surgery, Kilian’s call up is the positivity needed for the future. Add Kilian to Christopher Morel and everything he’s done so far and the future looks bright.
What’s On Tap Next?
On Saturday, the Cubs and Cardinals will play two at the Friendly Confines. Saturday’s first game will begin at 12:20 p.m. CDT. Game two will begin at 6:15 p.m. CDT. As mentioned Matt Swarmer has been confirmed as one of the starters with Caleb Kilian. Worth noting, Kilian will need to be added to the 40-man roster, so subsequent roster moves will likely be coming.
