After being crowned the new AEW World Champion at Double Or Nothing this past Sunday on PPV, CM Punk competed in a Trio’s match on AEW Dynamite this Wednesday with new friends FTR. That match was a trio that fans were very excited to see. They ended up walking out of that match with the win and a happy fan base. Another product of the match was the announcement that CM Punk and Hiroshi Tanahashi will be the first match at Forbidden Door.
That all came crashing down though right before AEW Rampage on Friday. It was announced that CM Punk would be there live to address the fans about the AEW World Championship. As soon as he made it into the ring though, you knew the news wasn’t good. His eyes were red and he was tearing up.
It didn’t take long for him to deliver a passionate promo like always. But this time, it was truly sad to hear from him. We learned a lot from all of this though. Now we know that CM Punk will not be going anywhere, he is going to continue until the wheels fall off. This is just a bump in the road and he will be back after surgery to correct an injury.
Tony Khan and CM Punk talked before the show and it seems like the answer they came up with is that he will remain Champion until he returns. That said, no one knows how long he will be out. But, for now, AEW is looking to crown an Interim AEW Champion at Forbidden Door on June 26. We will be getting answers regarding who will compete for the interim title over the next week.
It is sad to see this run cut short before the Summer Of Punk was able to fully get underway. But, he will be back and ready before we even know it. That said, who will be the AEW and NJPW star that will step up to the plate for this honor?
