Report: Phil Mickelson, Rickie Fowler Set To Join LIV Golf Invitational Series

Mickelson has been tied to the Saudi Golf League since February, while Fowler recently spoke about keeping his playing options open.

The LIV Golf Invitational Series hosts their highly-anticipated inaugural event this week at Centurion Club in St. Albans, England. Last Tuesday, LIV Golf finally announced 42 of the 48 players taking part in the event, with Dustin Johnson, Sergio Garcia, and Louis Oosthuizen headlining the field.

Now, another pair of golf’s biggest names appear to be joining them.

According to Golf Channel’s Rich Lerner, Phil Mickelson and Rickie Fowler will be “imminently” joining the LIV Golf Invitational Series.

Mickelson, a six-time major champion, has been tied to LIV Golf since making controversial comments to biographer Alan Shipnuck in February. Mickelson spoke about his interest in joining the rival tour despite the Saudi’s being “scary mother (bleep)-ers” and their long history of human rights violations. The backlash from those comments led to Mickelson losing sponsorships with KPMG, Amstel Light, and Workday, while also being forced to miss the 2022 Masters and PGA Championship.

Shortly after Lerner’s initial post, LIV Golf issued a statement confirming Mickelson will play this week at Centurion Club.

Mickelson himself also released a statement via Twitter on Monday.

Big Talent Joining LIV

The 51-year-old Mickelson seems to be all but finished with his PGA Tour career, but still intends to take part in golf’s four major championships. However, the United States Golf Association (USGA) has yet to make a ruling for the upcoming U.S. Open, which will provide a first look at how major tournaments tolerate those involved with LIV Golf.

Fowler, 33, has struggled on the PGA Tour over the past few years yet remains one of golf’s most polarizing figures. Fowler currently ranks 145th in the Official World Golf Rankings and has not won an event since the WM Phoenix Open in 2019.

During the week of the PGA Championship in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Fowler made some intriguing comments regarding his future with the sport.

“To be straightforward with you guys, I haven’t necessarily made a decision one way or the other. I’ve mentioned in the past, do I currently think that the PGA Tour is the best place to play? I do. Do I think it can be better? Yes.”

PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan has promised to suspend or even potentially ban players that join the LIV Golf circuit. Fowler also stated that he wished there would be more clarity on a potential punishment from the PGA Tour.

“I think guys would probably like to know,” Fowler said. “Because if you’re trying to make a decision one way or the other, I know there’s some guys that are probably in a position where the consequence may not matter. They may just be ready to go play and not look back type of thing and see how things come full circle.”

The LIV Golf Invitational Series

LIV’s eight-event series will include seven regular-season tournaments and a team championship match-play finale at Trump Doral in Miami, Florida. Each tournament will be a 54-hole, no-cut team event, with the rosters being determined via draft. The field will have a maximum of 48 players on 12 four-man teams for all eight events.

CEO Greg Norman and the LIV Golf Invitational Series are set to have purses of $20 million in individual prizes for each event, plus a $5 million payout to the winning team. The top three individuals from LIV’s eight events will split a $30 million bonus, while the championship in Miami will provide another opportunity for $50 million in total prizes.

The second LIV Golf event takes place at Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club in Portland, Oregon from July 1-3, marking the first time the rival tour hosts a tournament on North American soil.

Buckle up, folks. The golf drama is only just getting started.
