Welcome back, Alec Mills. As previously reported, the right-handed pitcher was scheduled to start tonight’s Iowa Cubs game against the Toledo Mud Hens, but apparently, plans change. The Chicago Cubs activated Mills from the injured list and optioned 24-year-old rookie right-hander Anderson Espinoza to the Triple-A club.

The hope was for Mills to build up to at least five innings pitched with one more start at Triple-A. However, according to Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune, Ross says he will use Mills out of the bullpen.

Terrific outings by Justin Steele and Matt Swarmer could’ve played a role in this decision. Steele went seven innings allowing only one earned run against the Cardinals on June 5. Swarmer has back-to-back quality starts against the Brewers and Cardinals in his first two big-league starts.

Alec Mills leaves Iowa after recording a 4.97 ERA in 12.2 IP. This season, he hasn’t pitched a game with the MLB club due to a lower back strain and right quadriceps strain. Anderson Espinoza has only made one appearance with the Cubs but pitched solidly, racking up six strikeouts in four innings out of the bullpen.
