According to Jesse Rogers of ESPN, the Chicago Cubs and Willson Contreras avoided arbitration today. They’ve agreed on a salary for the 2022 season.

Contreras and the Cubs were reportedly scheduled for an arbitration hearing today. But the two sides agreed to a salary of $9.625 million before the hearing took place.

There’s been chatter as to whether the Cubs will extend Willson Contreras, who becomes a free agent following this season. But after finally agreeing to a 2022 salary, almost halfway through this season, the probability of the Cubs extending Contreras to a longer contract is highly unlikely.

Does Willson Contreras Wear A Chicago Cubs Uniform After 2022?

Many Chicago Cubs fans aren’t happy about the idea of Willson Contreras wearing a different uniform after the season. But had ownership wanted to offer the All-Star backstop an extension, it likely would have happened before the week of the arbitration hearing.

For the season, Willson Contreras is making his case as the top offensive catcher throughout the league. The slugger is batting .277 with 10 home runs, 23 RBIs, a .403 OBP, and a .933 OPS.

He ranks fourth in the league in offensive WAR with a 2.4. Contreras ranks first among all catchers in home runs, as well as OBP, SLG, and OPS. He’s also in the top five in hits, doubles, and RBIs.

Willson Contreras is definitely the focal point in talks of the trade market this summer and rightfully so. He’s easily made a case to be the starting catcher for the NL in this summer’s All-Star Game. This should cause the phones in the Cubs’ front office to ring nonstop with potential suitors for the slugger.

In the best-case scenario, Contreras continues his dominance for the next two months. At least until the Chicago Cubs deal him in a major trade package before the deadline.
