The Chicago White Sox notched one in the win column Friday night on the South Side. Opening a weekend series against the Texas Rangers, it was an excellent bounce-back victory for the Sox after a big letdown in the rubber match against the Dodgers.

The Pale Hose used Reynaldo Lopez as the opener. The right-hander tossed two scoreless innings and fanned three. Davis Martin was originally scheduled to start but followed with five innings of his own out of the bullpen. He allowed two runs on three hits and struck out six in his third big-league outing.

Signs of Life

The White Sox bats are starting to wake up from their early-season slumber. They have averaged five runs a game over the last four games with nine coming on Thursday against Los Angeles.

The Sox opened the scoring this one in the second inning with a single by Yasmani Grandal that plated Jake Burger. However, the lead did not hold very long as the Rangers added solo home runs in the fifth and the sixth innings by Nathaniel Lowe and Adolis Garcia, respectively.

Pantera on the Loose

White Sox centerfielder Luis Robert was considered American League MVP candidate by many entering the season. Off to a relatively slow start after returning from the COVID list, he has not lived up to those expectations to date. However, his struggles at the plate have not impacted his prowess on the base paths.

Robert gave his team a jolt by stealing second and third in the sixth inning after reaching on a fielder’s choice. The throw to third base escaped Texas third baseman Ezequiel Duran and Robert was able to score to tie the game at two.

In the seventh inning, AJ Pollock doubled over the head of left fielder Brad Miller to score Grandal, who walked to lead off the inning.

The lead did not last as Kendall Graveman allowed a solo homer to Corey Seager with two outs in the eighth inning, which tied the game at three apiece.

Eighth-Inning Fireworks

The White Sox managed to put up a crooked number in the bottom of the eighth with a five-run outburst. With two outs already on the board, Jake Burger reached an infield single that was misplayed by the Rangers infield. Yoan Moncada followed with a base hit and Yasmani Grandal hit a tiebreaking two-run double with two outs.

The South Siders didn’t stop there and poured more gas on the fire. Leury Garcia pinch ran for Grandal and scored on Josh Harrison’s single. Danny Mendick capped off the inning with a two-run homer to left field to put the White Sox up 8-3.

That mark held as the final score of the game after Liam Hendricks pitched a perfect ninth inning for a White Sox winner.

Notes

Danny Mendick is hitting .324/.342/.432 in his last 10 games.

This was the first game in which the Chicago White Sox scored more than seven runs and won since the third game of their season (April 10 at Detroit).

Lance Lynn will make his 2022 season debut on Tuesday in Detroit.
