White Sox Win 5-1 to Take Series in Detroit Behind Cease, Vaughn, and Robert

The White Sox strung together clutch hits in the 2nd and 5th for enough runs to power another win over the Tigers behind Dylan Cease.

The Chicago White Sox took another one from the Detroit Tigers on Tuesday night by a score of 5-1. Dylan Cease stayed undefeated in 10 decisions against Detroit. The Sox righty did not have his best stuff but was able to last five innings and record the victory.

Cease allowed one unearned run on his throwing error, fanned eight, allowed seven hits, and issued a walk. He now owns a 10-0 record with a 1.91 ERA in 11 career starts against Detroit.

Both teams loaded the bases in the first inning. Cease was to blame for Detroit’s lone run as he threw away a pick-off attempt that allowed Victor Reyes to score. Detroit opener Drew Hutchison struck out Leury Garcia to escape the White Sox’s first-inning threat. Hutchison allowed two runs on five hits and two walks in his four innings of work.

Hutchison wasn’t so fortunate in the second frame. He retired the first two hitters, but the next four White Sox singled. Andrew Vaughn and Luis Robert each recorded RBI singles, driving in Danny Mendick and AJ Pollock, respectively. The clutch at-bats put the Sox ahead 2-1.

Chicago added two more runs against Wily Peralta in the fifth. Vaughn’s base hit started the rally and Peralta plunked Robert. Jose Abreu followed with a strikeout but Yoan Moncada came through with an RBI double to right field and Leury Garcia plated him with a sacrifice fly.

Andrew Vaughn went 4-4 with a walk and Luis Robert plated two runs for the Pale Hose. Vaughn is hitting .563 with seven RBIs in five games against the Tigers in 2022. The South Siders are 4-1 against the Tigers in Detroit this year.

The Bullpen is Ok

The combination of Jimmy Lambert, Joe Kelly, and Reynaldo Lopez covered the final four innings. The trio shut down the Tigers and allowed no runs on two hits while fanning six and issuing no walks.

It was a very promising performance from the White Sox bullpen. The injured, over-worked, and underperforming relievers came through to lock in the win for their starter, Dylan Cease.

Notes

Prior to the game, Liam Hendriks landed on the 15-day IL with a right forearm strain.

Joe Kelly returned from the 15-day IL as Hendriks went on the shelf.

The White Sox optioned Bennett Sousa to Triple-A Charlotte and recalled Davis Martin.

Tim Anderson collected two hits in his first rehab start.
