As the Chicago Bears’ new front office and coaching staff lead the team into the future, they haven’t forgotten the franchise’s roots. As the team took the field Thursday for minicamp, every Bears player came out wearing a No. 41 jersey. If you aren’t familiar with that number, it was worn by the late, great Brian Piccolo, who passed away 52 years ago today.
A bit of background information on Piccolo – he joined the Bears in 1965 after trying out as a free agent. In 51 games across four seasons with the Bears, Piccolo rushed for 927 yards and four touchdowns on 258 carries. The Pittsfield, MA native played fullback and primarily shared the backfield with Gale Sayers. The two became fast friends and the story of their rapport eventually turned into a movie titled “Brian’s Song.”
There are a plethora of questions surrounding the Chicago Bears as they head into the 2022 NFL season. But, for one moment, we can all step back and appreciate how cool it is to honor a fallen legend like Brian Piccolo. Kudos to the Bears’ front office and coaching staff for putting together such an earnest and visually striking tribute.
